What happens in an Antenatal Class?

If you’re expecting a baby, you may be wondering: what actually happens in an antenatal class? Booking your first antenatal class can feel like stepping into the unknown.

At Motherbump, we’re equipped with the team and expertise needed to guide you through this unfamiliar time, giving you the confidence, knowledge and support you need.

What are Antenatal Classes?

Antenatal classes are designed to help you prepare for pregnancy, labour, birth, and life with your newborn. The best antenatal classes don’t just provide information. They offer practical skills, emotional support, and the chance to connect with other mothers going through the same journey.

At Motherbump, classes are held in a relaxed, welcoming environment in South Belfast, running over six weekly evening sessions, making them easy to fit into your routine.

What happens in a Motherbump Antenatal Class?

Motherbump is structured as a 6-week course, with each session building your knowledge step-by-step without overwhelming you.

Here is what you can expect from your 6 weeks with us.

Session 1: Overview of Pregnancy & Preparing for Your New Arrival

This session sets the foundation, covering the basics of pregnancy and what to expect in the months ahead. You’ll start thinking about how to prepare for your baby’s arrival in a practical, manageable way.

Session 2: Late Pregnancy & Preparing for Birth

As your due date approaches, this session focuses on the final stages of pregnancy and how to get ready for labour. You’ll learn what to pack, how to recognise early signs of labour, and how to prepare both physically and mentally.

Session 3: What to Expect in Labour

One of the most important sessions, this covers the stages of labour, pain management techniques, and ways to feel more in control during the birth process.

Session 4: Medical Interventions & Assisted Deliveries

This session provides honest, clear information about medical options that may arise during labour, including inductions, assisted deliveries, and caesarean sections, helping you feel informed and prepared for all possibilities.

Session 5: Postnatal Care and Looking After a Newborn

After birth, knowing how to care for yourself and your baby is essential. This session covers recovery, emotional wellbeing, and the practical aspects of newborn care.

Session 6: Everything You Need to Know About Infant Feeding

Led by an infant feeding specialist, this session explores breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and combination feeding, giving you the confidence to choose what works best for you and your baby.
